Boswellia Serrata for Dogs: Natural Joint and Mobility Support
Joint problems are common in dogs, especially in large or active breeds. Stiffness, reduced mobility, and discomfort can become a problem over time and make it harder for them to enjoy daily life as much as they perhaps used to.
One natural ingredient gaining attention for canine joint support is Boswellia serrata, a plant extract with a long history in traditional medicine. In this post, we’ll cover what Boswellia serrata is, how it works, and how to include it in your pup’s joint care routine.
What Is Boswellia Serrata?
Boswellia serrata is a tree native to India, Africa, and the Middle East. Its resin contains active compounds called boswellic acids, known for their anti-inflammatory properties. In human and animal studies, Boswellia has been linked to improved joint comfort and mobility. It gained popularity in the equine community in the 1990's to support joint health in horses, and those benefits extend to dogs too.
How Boswellia Supports Joint Health in Dogs
Joint discomfort in dogs often stems from inflammation - whether caused by arthritis, injury, or general wear and tear. The active compounds in Boswellia serrata, called boswellic acids, help by blocking 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), an enzyme that produces inflammatory molecules known as leukotrienes. Fewer leukotrienes means less swelling, pain, and cartilage damage.
Boswellic acids may also slow cartilage breakdown by reducing certain enzymes linked to degeneration. In a 2004 Swiss study, 71% of dogs with osteoarthritis showed less stiffness and pain, and improved mobility, within six weeks of Boswellia supplementation. Owners reported their dogs were more willing to walk, climb stairs, and play.
By helping ease inflammation, protect cartilage, and improve comfort, Boswellia can help dogs stay active for longer.
How to Give Boswellia Serrata to Your Dog
Boswellia serrata is available in various forms for dogs, including:
- Chewable tablets or soft chews
- Powder to sprinkle over food
- Capsules
It can be given on its own or as part of a joint support blend with other beneficial ingredients like chondroitin, MSM, glucosamine and green-lipped mussel.
